I&P: Time Capsule, Part Two

Ideas

I spent some days thinking about what kind of container would add to the meaning of my items, and I ended up settling on three:

  1. An emerald-cut jewelry box
  2. A small version of my Wayuu bag
  3. A ring-inspired lid on a round container

I had some real-world inspiration for all of my capsule designs.

The Box

Emerald cut and box

The jewelry box was a gift from a friend, but its size is what really drew me to using it as a time capsule container. This is already where I keep some jewelry and small knickknacks. I would create one of similar size and shape, but with the top looking like a typical emerald-cut gem.

The Bag

My Wayuu bag

These handwoven bags come from northern Colombia’s indigenous people of La Guajira. This one in particular was a gift from my grandfather. While I love my bag and use it daily, I can’t stop thinking about how exploited this tribe is– most likely being forced to pump out these bags as fast as possible and seeing little of the profit for their community. It’s a difficult thing to come to terms with, but I try to share the story with as many people as I can. By making a small version to hold my objects, I hope the story would be passed down as well.

The Ring

A ring similar to the one my grandmother lost

I wish I had an image of the actual ring my grandmother had, but unfortunately I do not. This random image I found online is close enough. My idea would be to made the lid of the round capsule resemble the ring.

The Protoype

I have not collected enough recyclables again to make a true prototype, so I decided to use the jewelry box as a base to build on and use simple cardboard to make the emerald shape.

It was deceivingly difficult to measure and cut and tape all these little pieces, but I’m happy with how it turned out.
